Course objectives
The course is designed as a theoretical and practical unit. It leads students to an understanding of palliative care and introduces the procedures and services that fall within this field. The course content presents the etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and common treatment strategies for gynecological and senological malignancies, with an emphasis on symptomatic and supportive care that is concurrent with oncologic treatment aimed at relieving pain and other physical and mental distress, preserve the client's dignity and provide support and assistance to the client's loved ones/caregivers. A core part of the course content is the issue of perinatal hospice and the care of the woman and her family during and after perinatal loss.
Learning outcomes
- The student characterizes the care of a dying and oncological patient - The student can describe appropriate palliative and symptomatic treatment, understands the pathophysiology of pain - The student knows the basic indications for non-pharmacological procedures and the rules of drug administration (including e.g. opioids) - The student is able to provide care in the area of the woman's needs - The student knows the specifics and principles of communication with the oncology patient and with the woman and her family after perinatal loss in the various stages of acceptance of the condition - The student knows the principles of communication with the patient, or with the survivors, including the basics of providing crisis support intervention.
- The student understands and respects the importance of the social environment and cultural traditions to the way we experience loss and grief
- The student knows the legal framework for caring for the  body of the deceased.
- The student is able to maintain an appropriate balance between personal and professional roles
- The student is aware of his/her own personal and professional limits
- Student understands the importance of interprofessional collaboration.
Syllabus
  • - Basic definition and background of palliative care.
  • - Clinical picture of advanced gynaecological cancers
  • - Symptoms of advanced stages of the disease and possibilities of their alleviation ( somatic symptoms, psychological, neuropsychiatric symptoms).
  • - Specific nursing procedures in advanced patients. Understanding the existential and spiritual aspects of the experience of advanced illness. The ethical and legal framework of care for advanced patients in the Czech Republic.
  • - Communication with the patient and family in the context of advanced and terminal illness. - Issues of perinatal hospice and perinatal loss * Working in an interdisciplinary team.
