Course objectives
The course is designed as a theoretical and practical unit and focuses on the specifics of diseases related to the oral cavity in all age groups. It focuses mainly on the area of dental hygiene and prevention in pregnancy, on education in preventive care.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will:
- Understand the importance of oral hygiene in the prevention of oral diseases (especially dental caries and periodontal disease) with special reference to pregnant and lactating women and children.
- They know the principles of home and professional oral hygiene care and can motivate and educate patients to provide appropriate care.
- They have a basic understanding of oral mucosal diseases and the manifestations of general oral diseases.

  • 1. Anatomy and physiology of the orofacial region Dental caries - Etiology and pathogenesis - Diagnosis, therapy, principles of prevention Diseases of the periodontium - Classification of periodontopathies - Etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases - Diagnosis in periodontology - Principles of therapy and prevention
  • 2. Oral hygiene - Microbiology of the oral cavity - Dental plaque, its characteristics and measurement - Home care for oral hygiene (cleaning techniques including interdental hygiene and tongue care, toothpastes, mouthwashes, etc.) - Professional oral hygiene care, the importance of the work of the dental hygienist
  • 3. Oral cavity of pregnant and lactating women, newborns and infants and specifics of oral hygiene care for these groups. The most common diseases of the oral mucosa Manifestations of general oral diseases
