Course objectives
Professional Nursing Practice IV is a practical course that builds on previous professional nursing practice and integrates knowledge of nursing theory and practice, basic scientific disciplines, natural, social and behavioral sciences and provides the acquisition, consolidation and deepening of nursing knowledge and skills in selected medical fields fields. The course takes the form of direct and indirect patient care, in accordance with the applicable legislation, and enables students to apply the theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired by studying theoretical-practical disciplines in the conditions of a health care provider. The content of the course is practical activity of students in the form of block internships within selected clinical disciplines: paediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, oncology, palliative care, otorhinolaryngology and dermatovenerology. The aim of the internships is the ability to apply the nursing process in a pediatric patient, women with gynecological disease, before and after delivery, the application of the nursing process in cancer patients, in palliative care patients, in patients with otorhinolaryngological and dermatovenerological diseases, and to obtain theoretical knowledge and practical skills from the above mentioned fields, including specific nursing habits. The practice takes the form of block instruction under the guidance of mentors, it can also take place in continuous operation, in the inpatient and outpatient department. It is realized in university hospitals in Brno or with contractual providers of health services (with a framework contract for the practice of students of the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University). The completed internships, activities, performances and other activities within the nursing practice are recorded in the Logbook of Nursing Practice (Logbook).
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
be familiar with the operation of the health service provider's facilities;
obey the rules of occupational health and safety and fire protection;
observe the principles of safety of care;
adhere to the principles of barrier nursing care;
use and maintain medical and nursing documentation; orientate in nursing and medical terminology;
to perform nursing activities and procedures according to established criteria and in accordance with the latest scientific knowledge (Evidence Based Nursing);
implement individual and group health education methods;
participate in comprehensive care in collaboration with other health care professionals; strengthen communication skills;
define the organization of children's health care;
understand developmental traits of childhood; use appropriate means of communication in hospitalized children; apply the nursing process to children hospitalized in surgical or pediatric wards;
to perform pedagogical-educational activities in hospitalized children;
understand the specifics and organization of care in gynecology and obstetrics wards; understand the basic diagnoses in gynecology and obstetrics and their clinical manifestations; apply the nursing process in women with gynecological disease;
to provide care to the postpartum woman;
understand the specifics and organization of oncology care;
to understand basic diagnoses in oncology and their clinical manifestations; identify the needs of cancer patients;
apply the nursing process to cancer patients;
understand the organization of palliative care;
identify the needs of palliative care patients; provide palliative care;
understand the specifics and organization of care in otorhinolaryngology;
to understand the basic diagnoses in otorhinolaryngology and their clinical manifestations; identify the needs of patients with otorhinolaryngological disease;
apply the nursing process to patients with otorhinolaryngological disease;
understand the specifics and organization of care in dermatovenerology;
to understand the basic diagnoses in dermatovenerology and their clinical manifestations; identify the needs of patients with dermatovenerological disease; apply the nursing process in patients with dermatovenerological disease.
