Course objectives
The main aim of the subject is to provide students with sufficient basic knowledge and information about drugs used in the treatment of selected most important diseases that nutritional therapist may encounter in the clinical practice.

The subaims are to:
- familiarize students with valid drug legislation,
- introduce several drug groups building on the knowledge of general pharmacological principles,
- put emphasis on the aspects that can be reflected in the mutual interactions of food and drugs.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- search for relevant information on drugs and gain this information from reliable sources,
- know basic and important legislation on use of drugs,
- characterize specific drug groups stated in the syllabus with the emphazis on their therapeutic and adverse effects and potential drug interactions.

  • Seminar 1: Information on drugs, national and European drug authorities, legislation on medical products
  • Seminar 2: Drug dosage forms and routes of drug administration
  • Seminar 3: Analgesics
  • Seminar 4: Pharmacology of autonomic nervous system; interim revision test
  • Seminar 5: Pharmacology of hormones
  • Seminar 6: Insulins

Teaching methods
In practicals, the topics stated in the syllabus are introduced to the students by the pharmacology teacher in the form of a presentation. Various practical activities are planned for the students and will be obligatory to achieve credits. These practical activities will use available information technology and will focus on e.g., case reports form the real clinical practice, searching in valid legislation, searching on web pages of relevant regulatory authorities, or use of medical publications database.
Assessment methods
Credit will be given to students who will:
- Check their knowledge by passing all ROPOTs in the IS (minimum 4 points from each test)
- Attend all practicals (1 absence is permitted)
- Participate actively in teamwork during practicals
- Submit the results of teamwork according to the teacher's requirements
- Pass written interim test - 10 questions, 1 correct answer (= 1 point); no points subtraction, minimum 6 points (60%)
- Pass written/PC credit test - 20 questions, 1 correct answer (= 1 point); no points subtraction, minimum 12 points (60%)
