Course objectives
To gain knowledge of the effects of environmental and work environment factors on health. To understand the significance and impact of physical, chemical and biological factors (excluding infectious factors) as well as methods of assessment. To understand health risks and their assessment, and to learn the principles and possibilities for protecting public health.
Learning outcomes
- The student will describe the environmental and work environment components that affect health.
- The student will explain the effects of various physical chemical and biological factors.
- The student will explain health hazards and their assessment and monitoring of the environment in relation to health.
- The student will explain the principles and methods of public health protection.

  • 1) Protection of public health, determinants of health
  • 2) Air
  • 3) Water and health 4) Waste
  • 5) Noise
  • 6) Light as part of the environment and work environment. Effect on circadian rhythms.
  • 7) Radiation - ionising and non-ionising (excluding visible radiation)
  • 8) Chemicals I, general part: health effects (acute, chronic late, mutagenic, carcinogenic, teratogenic, allergenic, specific and non-specific). 9) Chemicals II, special part: heavy metals, organic compounds, inhalation, dietary, percutaneous, intravenous exposure
  • 10) Indoor environment
  • 11) Product safety
  • 12) Work and health
  • 13) Environment in the Czech Republic and globally, monitoring the relationship between environment and health
  • 14) Health risks, their importance, assessment and use

Assessment methods
To obtain the credit, it is necessary to successfully pass a written test. 20 multiple choice questions will be submitted, at least 11 must be answered correctly. The questions will relate to the lectured topics according to the syllabus, so to successfully pass the test it is necessary to attend lectures, which are together with accompanying materials the main source of information.
