Course objectives
In line with the introduction of new expensive medical technologies (innovative medicinal products and medical devices, imaging methods, screening programs, genetic testing, etc.) and specific need to enhance the efficiency of health spending costs there is the increasing pressure to evaluate these emerging healthcare technologies in clinical practice.
The main objectives of this seminars is to teach basic concepts and methods in HTA and to improve the capability to recognize, understand, and discuss theoretical frameworks in which specific concepts and methods are embedded.
Students will acquire knowledge about the historical background of evaluation in medicine in general and teach the basic concepts and methods of such evaluation in particular. Next, they will be introduced into the field of Health Technology Assessment (HTA), learn different approaches to HTA, and become familiar with the major subjects and developments in the field. Importantly, students will learn to identify the main problem that an intervention addresses, to measure this, to formulate hypothesis for HTA evaluation studies, and to assess the usefulness and relevance of this studies.
Learning outcomes
The student knows about the historical background of evaluation in general and health care evaluation in particular.
The student is introduced in the field of HTA and has learnt the various approaches to HTA.
The student is familiar with the major subjects and developments in the field of HTA.
The student has learnt to identify the main problem addressed by an intervention and how to measure its effect.
The student is able to formulate hypotheses for HTA studies and to assess their relevance.
The student is able to identify potential stakeholders in HTA evaluation studies

Assessment methods
REQUIREMENTS:

1. 100% attendance at seminars during the semester.
2. Absence will be excused only for serious medical reasons. Students must be aware that even in the case of excused absences (medical reasons) at least 80% attendance is required to obtain credit. In case the student has more than 20% excused or unexcused absence, he/she will have to repeat the course in the following semester.
3. Completion of assigned tasks. In case of unexcused absence, the student will be required to write a seminar paper for each absence. If the seminar paper is rejected due to deficiencies and is not corrected and re-submitted by the student for review, the student will not meet the requirements of the subject and will not get credit (see Policy of Absence and Late Arrivals, Academic Offenses, Plagiarism, and Unethical Behavior).
4. Active participation at seminars 5. On-line test with 15 questions and 30 minutes as a time limit, when 10 questions must be answered correctly to pass the test.
