Course objectives
Lessons should introduce main principals of interpersonal communication in geriatric medicine. Main objectives can be summarized as follows: main principals of communication, communication techniques, alternative communication skills, communication with family members . Gives information about crisis situations in medical field. Teaching involves lectures and class exercisses. Studets solve casuistics and find communication sollutions. At the end of the course students should be able use specific communication techniques with geronthology patients and their relatives.
Syllabus
  • Content and curriculum: - Problematic of ageism, - stereotypes, myths and fable in relation to seniors population.. - The particularity of approaches to the seniors – physiological disabilities, psychosocial factors, cognitive changes etc. - The techniques of active listening. - The quality of life of seniors evaluation during the interview. - Spiritual needs of senior patients – psychosocial relation, the intergenerational problems. - The technigues of balancing in stressful situation – how to deal with the bad news, how to recognise the needs of the terminal ill patients etc. - Ethics in gerontology, thanatology, euthanasy. - The prevention of burn out syndrome of caregivers, taking care of elderly people.
Assessment methods
One hour exercise, seminar written report is required for credit.
