Course objectives
This course covers the basic and advanced care of the neonate immediatelly after the delivery and during the first month of his/her life. Topics include first care of the newborn at the delivery room, observation of adaptation to extrauterine life during the transitional period, management of thermal stability and follow-up care. Special accent is pointed to the knowledge of resuscitation of the newborn, prevention of the SIDS and SBS, screening examinations, assess and satisfail the basic needs of the newborn. Goals: After the participation in the course students will be able to: -recognize and evaluate the state of the newborn after the delivery and during the transitional period; and to initiate resuscitation of the newborn, if necessary -manage the thermal stability of the newborn and developmentally focused nursing care, -manage the hygienic care of the newborn, providing the assessment of the newborns skin and the prevention of its damage, -identify the risks of Shaken Baby Syndrome and educate the parents in being aware of it, -identify the risks of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and educate the parents in prevetion of it, -take care of the newborn with neonatal jaundice and congenital and developmental diseases, -perfom the basic screenings, -assess the basic needs of the newborn and make up the care plans.
Syllabus
  • Subject contents: 1. Classification and evaluation of the newborn and warning signs of common problems of the well newborn. 2. Physical assessment of the newborn and evaluation of the adaptation to extrauterine life. 3. Care of the newborn at the delivery room. 4. Management of the thermal stability of the newborn. 5. Hygienic care of the newborn. 6. Shaken Baby Syndrome and education of the parents in beeing aware of it. 7. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and education of the parents in prevetion of it. 8. Possible iatrogenic skin damage and it is prevention. 9. The care of the newborn with neonatal jaundice. 10. The care of the newborn with congenital and developmental diseases. 11. Resuscitation of the newborn – practical training (with a manekin). 12. Neonatal screenings. 14. Assessment of the basic needs of the newborn and making up the care plans.
