- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to understand ethical dilemmas in geriatrics and gerontology, to develop awareness for ethical issues of ageing in the socio-cultural and existential context and to strengthen the appropriate attitudes to the geriatric patients.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction to geriatrics ethics 2. Transformation of the life structure in the old age 3. Ageing as a stage of human life (ethical and existential issues of ageing) 4. Quality of life in ageing and old age 5. Autonomy and criteria of subsidiary decision making 6. Old age, illness and lonesomeness 7. Morbidity, polymorbidity and vulnerability of a geriatric patient 8. Geriatric patient – person with human dignity and subject of human rights 9. Communication with a geriatric patient 10. Informed consent in geriatrics 11. Advance directives, living will 12. Death and dying 13. The European Recommendation “Protection of the Human Rights and Dignity of the Terminally Ill and the Dying“ (1418/1999) 14. Geriatric patients in biomedical research
