- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to describe and explain terms related to common laboratory work, name laboratory equipment and define its functions, describe individual steps of laboratory procedures, apply professional language in communication with doctors and colleagues, interpret laboratory reports; use grammatical structures typical of medical language.
- Syllabus
- Week 1: Introductory class. Information about the organisation of classes, requirements. Introducing the notion of English for laboratory technicians. Describing the contents, individual topics, educational tools and teaching approach. Needs assessment and placement test.
- Week 2: The job of laboratory technician. Laboratory equipment. Grammar: present tenses.
- Week 3: Routine chemistry analysers. Grammar: word order, adverbs.
- Week 4: Spectrophotometry. Grammar: articles in English.
- Week 5: Clinical haematology. Grammar: question.
- Week 6: Spectrophotometry - revision; HIV
- Week 7: Electrophoresis. Grammar: past simple vs past continuous.
- Week 8: Revision and mid-term test.
- Week 9: Osmometry. Grammar: past simple vs present perfect.
- Week 10: Transfusion, haematology - revision.
- Week 11: Chromatography. Grammar: expressing future in English.
- Week 12: Clinical biochemistry. Grammar: irregular plural forms in English.
- Week 13: Atomic absorption spectrometry. Grammar: countable/uncountable nouns in English.

- Assessment methods
- Attendance is compulsory. Two absences are tolerated provided a letter of excuse is handed in at the Department of Studies. It is highly recommended to make up for the absence in the same week. Assessment is based on the results of the credit test (score - minimum 65%) and attendance. Students get two credits for successful completion of the course.
