- Course objectives
- The course objective is to develop students' receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) English language skills and to enhance their knowledge of selected grammar chapters at level B2. The course also seeks to develop in students knowledge of specialized discipline-specific vocabulary and skills for effective doctor-patient communication.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to describe and explain terms related to body systems (namely skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, hematic, lymphatic, gastrointestinal, respiratory, and integumentary systems), their organs, functions and disorders; use practical medical vocabulary (namely the language of communication in hospital, surgery, and when examining patients; language of describing treatment, medication, medical instruments, and machines); should be able to apply medical language in doctor-patient communication, interpret medical texts, create medical documentation; use grammatical structures typical for medical language.

- WEEK 1: Introduction to the Study of English, E-learning, requirements, assessment, recommended literature and other study sources. In hospital.
- WEEK 2: The Human Body.
- WEEK 3: Muscular and Skeletal Systems - Anatomy.
- WEEK 4: Muscular and Skeletal Systems - Pathological Conditions.
- WEEK 5: Cardiovascular and Hematic/Lymphatic Systems - Anatomy.
- WEEK 6: Cardiovascular and Hematic/Lymphatic Systems - Pathological Conditions.
- WEEK 7: Gastrointestinal System - Anatomy.
- WEEK 8: MIDTERM TEST
- WEEK 9: Gastrointestinal System - Pathological Conditions.
- WEEK 10: Respiratory System - Anatomy and Pathological Conditions.
- WEEK 11: Integumentary System - Anatomy.
- WEEK 12: Integumentary System - Pathological Conditions.
- WEEK 13: REVISION.
- WEEK 14: FINAL TEST.
- Grammar taught in the course: passive, relative clauses, forming questions.
- In addition to the above mentioned topics and grammar, the course will also focus on the mastery of communicative skills - i.e. speaking, listening, reading, and writing - on the B2 level of the European Reference Framework.

- Assessment methods
- Attendance is compulsory. Two unexcused absences are tolerated. Absences beyond this quota are excused provided a letter of excuse is handed in at the Office for Studies which then officially displays it in the IS. Assessment is based on the attendance and results of the credit test (minimum score 60%).

- Information on completion of the course: Pro studenty se státní jazykovou zkouškou, příp. jejím ekvivalentem (TOEFL, FCE apod.) je účast na výuce v podzimním semestru nepovinná. Předmět si nicméně zaregistrují a na konci semestru jej ukončí složením zápočtového testu.
