Course objectives
The objectives of the subject are to enable students to: - Integrate psychology into the context of basic medical education for future health care professionals - Introduce psychology as an essential part of competent medical practice - Provide a theoretical context / field to integrate the information gained so far about the functioning of the body with the principles of functioning of the psyche - Present the complex outcomes of psychological science and clinical practice at the level of principles that can be applied in the work of a professional in the health care sector, to the benefit of his / her patients, as well as of the whole health teams - Enhance students' understanding on the basic psychological and psychotherapeutic principles, whose understanding is necessary not only for the understanding of health and illness but also for communication with patients in these states - To acquaint students with the bio-psycho-social model of health and illness - Helping students understand a human being as a psychophysiological unity - To teach students to work with the basics of field theory, holistic approach and model "Connections and Health" / Autoregulation and Allostasis - - To acquaint students with basic communication algorithms that can be applied in various contexts and situations of medical practice - - Specify the possibilities of application of psychology in various fields of medicine
Learning outcomes
- Student understand why psychology is important in medicine and distinguishes different approaches to disease and health (bio-medical, bio-psycho-social, holistic, self-regulating, allostatic) - Student understands definitions of health and is able to understand health in different contexts as a multi-level phenomenon - Student understands the relationship between emotion, motivation and health - Student understands the interaction approach to stress and the relationship of stress, health and illness - Student knows the factors that protect against stress and understand the concept of Resilience - Student understands the risks of stress in performing the profession of medical doctor / healthcare professional. Student can identify symptoms of chronic stress and knows the principles of their management and prevention in the process of developing the burnout syndrome - Student is able to explain the role of different psychological factors in physical symptoms. Student knows the multidimensional nature of the pain and the role of psychological factors in the perception of the pain. Student understands to placebo and nocebo effects and how they affect illness and recovery - Student understands the importance of health behavior and health behavior change, student knows the different models of health behavior and understand how to apply these models in clinical practice - Students will learn about the psychosocial relationships of chronic and incurable diseases, learn to use key psychosocial interventions that help people adapt and manage chronic disease, familiarize themselves with the psychological relationships of palliative care, learn the contradiction between the effort to help and the effort to help the patient die well, will know the processes of normal reaction to loss and processes of pathological grief - Students will be acquainted with the main changes in psychosocial development that occur during childhood, will be able to explain the stability and changes of physical and cognitive abilities during adulthood and old age, and will understand how developmental changes throughout life affect communication between doctor and patient - Student will learn the basic communication skills necessary for conducting the clinical interview and will familiarize themselves with the basic strategies for dealing with patient's strong emotions such as anger, anxiety, sadness, emotional stress, etc., acquire the knowledge of the psychotherapeutic principles necessary for communicating of unfavorable rights, - Student will know theoretical bases of various psychological therapies used in medical context. Student will understand the use of psychotherapeutic technic in clinical practice - The student will understand the influence of psychic factors on the functioning of various somatic systems - Student will become acquainted with the psychosomatic paradigm in medicine, will understand the concept of human being as psychophysiological unity, will get acquainted with basic nosological concepts of psychosomatic medicine and will be familiar with the basic explanatory models describing the relationship between psychosocial variables and disease. - The student will get acquainted with basic psychodiagnostic methods, possibilities and limits of psychological assessement, and use of his / her outcomes for medical practice.
