- Prerequisites
- Common level of high school knowledge in physics
- Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- General Nursing (programme LF, B-VO) (2)
- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basics of biophysics and its application in the field of medical diagnostic and therapeutic methods in the context of nursing care. The aim is to provide basic information about physical differences of individual methods and their biological effects. The aim is also to get acquainted with the methods and instruments by which these examinations are performed.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, students should be able to understand and know - to the extent necessary - the principles of diagnostic and therapeutic devices used in medicine; risks associated with the use of medical devices or examination and treatment methods (mechanical, electromagnetic and thermal factors or associated factors with ionizing radiation). They will be able to apply the principles of safe use of these devices in practice, will understand the physical principles of selected physiological processes (blood circulation, respiration) and will have a basic idea of the biophysics of the sensory organs.
- Syllabus
- Introduction to medical biophysics; Physical principles of medical instrumentation; Biophysical view of the structure of matter; Biological effects of ionizing radiation; Introduction to molecular biophysics; Thermodynamic processes in living systems; Bioelectric phenomena on membranes; Biophysics of the cardiovascular and respiratory system; Biophysical function of sensory receptors; Biophysics of hearing and sight; Effects of mechanical, acoustic, electromagnetic fields and non-ionizing radiation on living systems; Biosignals and their processing; Conventional X-ray imaging methods; Modern tomographic methods (CT, MRI); Diagnostic methods using radionuclides; Methods and apparatus for treating ionizing radiation; Measurement and registration of temperature, mechanical quantities; Optical diagnostic apparatus; Electrodiagnostic methods; Principles of diagnostic and therapeutic use of ultrasound; Methods and apparatus used for physical treatment and surgery; Apparatus to replace organ function; Nanomedicine
