Course objectives
The aim of this subject is to get acquainted with psychiatry, different psychiatric disorders, psychiatric treatment and specifics of the care of patients with mental disorders. Students will learn basic psychiatric terminology, disorders of basic mental functions (consciousness, emotivity, perception, thinking, memory, intellect and personality) and symptoms of specific mental disorders (schizophrenia, affective disorders, neurotic disorders, stress-related disorders, eating disorders and personality disorders). Another topic will be basics of therapy in psychiatry: pharmacotherapy and other biological treatment modalities, psychotherapy. Students will also be instructed about specifics of communication with psychiatric patients.

Student knows after completing the subject:
- basic principles of psychiatric treatment
- therapeutic procedures in the care of patients with disorders of individual psychic functions
- basic psychiatric terms
- manifestations of the most common psychiatric disorders
- the basics of psychiatric therapy
- the principles of communication with mentally ill
- the basics of child psychiatry

Teaching methods
Full-time teaching in the form of lectures
Assessment methods
In order to pass the course, the student must attend classes, only one excused absence is allowed. In case of multiple absences, substitution is necessary. Substitution is usually in the form of a written essay on a chosen topic or a short-term stay in one of the departments of the Psychiatric Clinic. Substitution funds can be arranged with Dr. Bartečková, deputy for education. The final exam takes the form of a written test. The test is a multiple-choice test with only one correct answer. To pass the test, at least 6 out of 10 questions must be answered correctly.
