Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to familiarize students with the theoretical foundations of the field of reproductive medicine, including information on factors affecting human reproductive health, causes of infertility, terminology and methods of assisted reproduction, terminology, history, and ethics of the field, and quality management.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will have:
- a complete overview of the history and current state of the field
- a knowledge of professional terminology
- know the factors affecting human reproductive health
- understand the options and limits of infertility treatment and procedures of assisted reproduction
- know the legislative framework of the field and requirements for quality control
- know professional organizations and possibilities for postgraduate education
- be aware of the ethical controversies related to the field
Syllabus
  • 1. Reproductive health. Definition, prevalence, and types of infertility. Causes of female and male infertility. Spermatogenesis and oogenesis. Reproduction research, model organisms, types of research studies.
  • 2. History of embryology and assisted reproduction. Current status and efficiency of assisted reproduction in the Czech Republic and abroad.
  • 3. Examination of fertility disorders. Procedures and terminology of reproductive medicine. Organization of IVF clinic. Activities and professional education of embryologists, ESHRE.
  • 4. Quality management and regulation of assisted reproduction. Legislation, hygiene standards, qualification requirements, KIPs.
  • 5. IVF from a doctor's point of view. Diagnosis of the causes of infertility. Ovulation induction, stimulation protocols, oocyte collection, embryo transfer. Communication with the patient.
  • 6. IVF from the embryologist's point of view. Laboratory activities, professional education, international comparison.
  • 7. Ethical aspects of assisted reproduction.

Assessment methods
Examination in the form of a test. To pass the test, you need to get 60 % of the points.
Náhradní absolvování
In the case of a trip abroad, it is possible to complete the subject in a substitute form. After returning from the trip, it is possible to write a final written test using the material provided in the lectures in the given semester.
