Prerequisites
To understand physiological principles and regularities, the subject physiology builds on the basic knowledge of the morphology of the human organism (secondary school biology - anatomy, histology), physical and chemical laws (biophysics, organic/anorganic chemistry).
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
The subject physiology, from the perspective of theory and practice, acquaints students with the functions of a healthy human organism, from the cellular level through individual organ systems to the organism as a whole. Within the subject Physiology - practicals, students gain knowledge of basic examination methods of functions of individual organ systems.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: - explain the basic principles of the functioning of the human body - explain and practically perform a basic examination of a healthy adult (respiratory system - spirometry; cardiovascular system - electrocardiography, blood pressure measurement, pulse examination, listening to heart sounds; nervous system - reflexes, visual acuity examination) - calculate human energy expenditure - evaluate the state of nutrition, including knowledge of the principles of proper nutrition
Syllabus
  • Syllabus of practicals: 1. Determination of red blood count, sedimentation rate, osmotic resistance of erythrocytes, blood groups. 2. Blood pressure measurement – basic methods, principles of correct measurement. 3. Changes in heart rate during changes in body position. Heart rate and blood pressure during exercise. 4. Palpation examination of the pulse. 5. Electrical activity of heart and its measurement, basic shapes of ECG curve. 6. Listening to heart sounds. 7. Calculation of energy metabolism. 8. Evaluation of nutritional status. 9. Compilation of the menu. Principles of proper nutrition. 10. Examination of basic reflexes (bicipital, tricipital, patellar, Achilles tendon reflex, pupil). 11. Examination of reaction time. 12. Examination of visual acuity, visual field, astigmatism. 13. Examination of respiratory volumes - spirometry. Forced vital capacity of 1s (FEV1).
