Course objectives
The aim of the course is to explore the cultural and social contexts of health and illness through various examples drawn from current findings in the field of medicine. We will deepen topics covered in the previous semester’s seminar, focusing on the relationship between politics and the intimate sphere of human life, the role of physicians and its changes, as well as the stigma of illness and disability, and models of disability. We will work with various types of materials, including textbooks and academic articles, as well as media outputs, statistics, and both qualitative and quantitative empirical data.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: - Think critically about various topics in sociology and social psychology in relation to medicine - Describe the evolution of the physician’s role and its transformations influenced by the development of modern and late-modern societies, the advent of artificial intelligence in medicine, and other current trends - Describe the evolution of thinking about disability and the shift from the medical to the social model, as well as define the strengths and weaknesses of the social model of disability - Understand the concept of stigma related to illness and disability, along with its social, historical, political, and cultural foundations - Comprehend the social influences on human behavior in areas such as family, education, and healthcare - Interpret both academic and mass media texts within these areas.
