- Course objectives
- he course is intended for students in the first year of the bachelor degree programme Optics and optometry at MU Faculty of medicine. Within this course the students are acquainted with rudiments of the physical measurements, the fundamentals of their execution and with methods of processing the measured results. The goal of the course is to provide the students with the personal experience with real-life measurements on the projects which are compiled to be utmost comprehensible to the students with respect to the fundamental physical principles. After familiarising the students with basics of the security of work in a laboratory there follows a collective lesson on the methods of measured data processing including the topic of determination of the error of the treated quantity. There are two electricity projects - measurements of the resistance and of the electric power - during which the students learn to build the circuits from the schemes and utilise the simple electric devices. Consistent with the target students' specialisation the other part of the course is focused on the measurement of basic optical quantities: the students gradually gain experience on refraction and reflection of light, imaging, index of refraction measurement and polarisational properties of light. During the individual projects the students utilise the specialised apparatuses as well - goniometers, microscope, refractometer and polarimeter. Upon passing out the course students gain the potential based on personal experience to correctly identify (in the scope of the covered topics) the physical phenomena underlying the problems to be encountered in their profession as well as they gain the generally valid competence to quantitatively analyse such situations.
- Syllabus
- Processing of the measurement results. Measurement on the resistors. Measurements of the electric power of alternating current. Measurement of the polarisation action of a polaroid and verification of Malus's law for real polaroids. Measurement of microscope parameters. Determination of index of refraction using minimal deviation method. Polarisation plane bending in a solution and its dependence on the solution concentration. Measurement on the dielectric surface reflected light. Focal distance measurement of a thin lens. Refractometric measurement of the index of refraction. Transmission of light through plan-parallel plate and triangular prism.
