Course objectives
This subject is understood as theoretical base for midwifery students. It brings multicultural dimension of midwifery care for individual needs of woman, her family and community. Outcomes – student will be able to: Correctly use terms ethnicity, culture, spirituality, religion; explain fundamental characteristics of particular ethnical, cultural and religious groups. Student will also be able to adapt midwifery care for clients with respect to their ethnical, cultural and spiritual specifics.
Syllabus
  • Content: 1.Subject introduction, basic terminology, importance of multicultural and transcultural midwifery concept, cultural model by Leiningerova, legislation. 2.Definition of culture, ethnicity, community, society, common and various signs. 3.Minorities living in the Czech republic. 4.Fundamental facts of selected religious sects in the Czech republic. 5.Dominant group constancy concept. Culture and ethnicity in interpersonal relationships. Cultural and ethical dimensions of health, disease, death. Rituals. 6.Multicultural community – consequences for health care/nurse services. The Czech republic as a multicultural community. 7.Various cultural concepts of midwifery work. Ethnocentrism and its consequences in midwifery care.
