Course objectives
Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Understand and explain the structure of a cell, basic structural principles and function of connective tissues, epithelial tissue, structure of different types of muscle tissue, structure and function of nervous tissue.
2. Characterize microscopic structure of organs of digestive system and endocrine glands, explain correlations of tissues within organs.
Syllabus
  • 1. The object and the significance of the histology, an overview of tissue processing methods.
  • 2. General histology and cytology: A cell as a system. Biomembranes. Structure and function of cell nucleus and organelles. Cytoplasmic membrane, cell surfaces and intercellular junctions.
  • 3. Cell cycle, cell division. Cell differentiation and origin of tissues. Basic types of tissues and their characterization.
  • 4. Epithelial tissue – origin, structure and function. Epithelial membranes and glandular epithelium - an overview. Absorptive epithelium.
  • 5. Connective tissue - origin, structure, classification and function. An overview of connective tissue proper.
  • 6. Connective tissue - cartilage and bone.
  • 7. Muscle tissue - origin, classification, structure and function. Characteristics of skeletal and smooth muscle tissue, mechanism of the muscle contraction.
  • 8. Nervous tissue – origin, structure and function. Structure of neurons. Synapsis, nervous transmitters. Neuroglial cells. Sheathes of nerve fibers.
  • 9. Microscopic anatomy: An overview of the microscopic structure of blood capillaries and vessels. Structure of the heart, cardiac muscle tissue.
  • 10. Lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes - structure and funtion. Lymphoepithelial circle of Waldeyer.
  • 11. An overview of microscopic structure of salivary glands. Saliva. General structure of hollow organs.
  • 12. Microscopic structure and function of stomach, small and large intestine, appendix vermiformis.
  • 13. Microscopic structure of liver, liver lobulus, blood circulation in liver. Microscopic structure of gall bladder, excretory bile passages. Pancreas and islets of Langerhans. Cells of gastro-entero-pancreatic system.
  • 14. An overview of microscopic structure of endocrine glands.
  • 15. Konsultations.
