Course objectives
Strabology deals with single binocular vision disorders which can be clinically described as squint. During this course particular emphasis will be given to the basic examination methods in strabology.
Learning outcomes
At the end of these practice tutorials student will be able to define and perform particular examinations tests and theoretically recommend their application in specific cases.
Syllabus
  • Examination of the sensory arm of the fusion: binocular balance tests (Bagoliny, Worth, Polatest, D-Test, Irvin-Kubik, test with a gray filter) synoptophore • Stereopsis (Titmus test, TNO randomdot, Randot, Lang, Frisby, Best, Dolman-Howart) • Examination of retinal correspondence (Herring-Bielschowsky, Giessen, with red glass and prisms) • Examination of fixation (visuscope, Heidinger brushes, hand-eye co-ordination) • Examination of crowding phenomenon, quantitative and qualitative measurements of the sensory fusion effectiveness • Examination of the motor arm of the fusion: examination of motility (preliminary, Hess, Lancaster, Ryba, Weiss, objective methods - contact lens with coil) • Examination of convergence (preliminary, convergometr • Examination of the position of eyes (Hirschberg, Bruckner, intermittent cover test) • Measurement of angle gamma (perimeter, synoptophore) • Measurement of squinting angle (millimetric ruler, alternating cover test with prisms, Krimsky, Madox cross, synoptophore, perimeter, photographic methods) • Examination of cyclorotations (Maddox double prism, Maddox plate) • AC/A index, examination of fusion reserve (synoptophore, free prisms in real space) • Examination of accommodative facility (flipper) • Examination of vergence facility (prismatic flipper by Gracis) • Examination of accommodation dynamics (infrared videometry ) • Examination of vergence dynamics (Hirschberg videometry) • Screening, photoscreening methods (orthogonal, isotropic, eccentric photorefraction )
