- Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- Nutritive therapist (programme LF, B-SZ)
- Dietitian (programme LF, B-NUT)
- Course objectives
- The aim of this subject is to provide the students with the theoretical background they could benefit from in frame of forthcoming trend of construction of individual dietary programmes intended for different subsets of patients, on the grounds of determinantion of their genetic traits. The students will be introduced to the basic concepts of clinical genetics that relate to the nutritional determinants, as well as to the most frequent diseases, the therapy of which requires individualized nutritional practice.
- Learning outcomes
- After completion of the course, the students will be able to: 1) explain briefly the basics of mendelian as well as non-mendelian inheritance 2) discuss the basic monogenous diseases that can be modified by diet 3) discuss the basic multigenous diseases that can be modified by diet 4) discuss the concept of the personalized medicine from the perspective of the genetic background of an individual 5) explain the main relationships between gene expression and diet including examples 6) explain the basics of nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics
- Syllabus
- Human genome and its structure, reaction to environmental factors. Mitochondrial and nuclear heredity. Gene and non-gene determination of biological characteristics from the nutritional perspective. Mutation types (exon, intron, promoter mutations, point mutations and their effects, insertion-deletion mutations, frameshift mutations). Monogenous and polygenous diseases. Relation of the multigene disease to the environment with respect to the qualitative and quantitative aspects of individual nutrition. Civilization diseases as a special sort of multigene disease. Genetics of obesity, stratification of patients based on conceivable genetic risk. Importance of DNA diagnostics in the practice of a dietitian. Nutritional counselling from the genetics perspective. Nutrigenomics.
