- Course objectives
- The course provides an overview of key topics in cognitive psychology (perception; attention; memory; learning; cognitive skills and abilities), personality psychology; developmental psychology and special clinical and educational psychology of children, which can be usefully applied in various areas of the orthoptist profession as well as in increasing study efficiency.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the students will be able to:
- Summarize non-intuitive aspects of the psychology of human visual and auditory perception and attention, with an emphasis of how these principles can be applied in orthoptics;
- Apply the knowledge of basic principles of attention, memory, thinking and skill-building in their own study behaviour as well as in future work with patients;
- Recognize unique aspects of different developmental stages and use the knowledge in future interaction with child patients;
- Stay aware of and apply the principles of positive and effective educational guidance when working with child patients;
- Recognize and respond adequately to the special needs of children with various types of physical, mental or social handicaps, psychological disturbances or learning disabilities. - Syllabus

- Thinking and reasoning; cognitive operations; cognitive skills and abilities
- Personality; the "nature vs. nurture" aspects of personality and pathology
- Infant and toddler psychology
- Cognitive development in children
- Social development in early childhood; attachment; deprivation
- Socialization and parenting/teaching style; acquisition of meta-skills; evidence-based effective guidance
- Promoting health behaviour in children
- Working with children with sensory impairment
- Children with mental disability, speech disorders, learning disabilities and autistic disorders
- Emotional and behavioural disorders in childhood; the CAN syndrome
- Working with children with physical disability, neurological disorders and long-term and terminal illness

- Lectures; homework assignments; classroom discussion.
- Assessment methods
- Colloquium. To pass the course, the student must achieve a predetermined number of points for course attendance, homework and final electronic test.
