Course objectives
To show the fundamental possibilities of using demographic methods in helping to understand basic issues in the field of public health at regional, national and international levels and to contribute to the understanding of demographic and social aspects of population development. To clarify the basic sources, flows and ways of evaluating data on population situations and processes.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- define the concept of demography and its subject, demographic phenomena and processes, methods of their identification, sources of demographic data
- assess the state and structure of the Czech population
- assess the demographic movement of the population
- evaluate data on the population situation and processes at the regional level
- understand and use demographic forecasts
- identify and make appropriate use of information sources in relevant areas.
Syllabus
  • 1) Demographics. Demographic theory and data - History of demography and its development. Data and data sources
  • 2) Demographic statics - Population and its spatial distribution. Population structure - sex, age, marital status, education, economic activity.
  • 3) Demographic dynamics - Household.
  • 4) Demographic dynamics - Fertility, birth rates, abortion rate.
  • 5) Demographic dynamics - Mortality, mortality rates, causes, suicide rate.
  • 6) Demographic dynamics - Marriage and divorce rates.
  • 7) Demographic dynamics - Population health, well-being.
  • 8) Demographic dynamics - Migration and population movements.
  • 9) Natural change of population. World population trends and prospects.
  • 10) Demographic forecast/projection.
