Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the basics of literary studies, introduction to the terminology and methodology of literary studies, introduction to the problems of linguistic and literary communication (including non-violent communication), teaching literary theory in a linguistically heterogeneous classroom.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies. Students will gain literary theoretical terminology and be able to apply these terminology to interpretation of literary texts.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic concepts and the literature of the subject. 2. Citation, publication ethics, and bibliographic data. 3. Language and literary communication (including issues of non-violent communication). 4. The character nature of a literary work. 5. The linguistic means of a literary text. 6. Problems of Genology: literary genres and trends. 7. Thematic analysis, and structure of a literary work. 8. Introduction to the theory of verse. Prosodic systems in Czech literature. 9. Analysis of syllabotonic verse. 10. Traditional verse and strophic formations. 11. Free verse: analyses. 12. Teaching literary theory; the teaching and role of literary theory in the linguistically heterogeneous classroom.

Teaching methods
Form of teaching: seminar. Teaching methods: discussion of texts analysed collectively, comparison of texts analysed, pair work, homework and homework assignments.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: Submit an essay on the topic and pass the final test which contains questions related to the topics listed in the syllabus. The test is scored. Students must obtain at least 85 % right answers.
