- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to gain a clear knowledge of the topic of Optics at the university level. Emphasis is placed on the logical structure of this discipline and on acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary for teaching physics at primary school (therefore, a greater number of simple experiments are included in the lecture and the relation of the discussed material to practice, nature, home, etc.).
Knowledge: systematic review with understanding and ability to solve basic problems in Optics with emphasis on application to education. Relate the topics discussed to phenomena in nature and everyday practice. Importance of observing workplace safety and regulations in relation to optical instruments and radiation sources (especially LASERS) in school/everyday practice.
Skills: be able to identify the principles of natural phenomena and engineering applications using optics. Perform approximation based on the basic laws of physics and then calculate simple application examples. Know simple school experiments and relate the material discussed to practical applications. To be aware of the physical nature of practical applications and phenomena, especially in the field of optics. To be able to make an informed estimate of values.
Attitude:
Learn the values of objectivity and the importance of scientific work. To master the approaches of looking rationally and critically at societal-wide problems through the lens of the physical corrective. - Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course, the Participant should know and be able to:
- The basic concepts and laws of optics and their application to simple problems, including the application of basic differential and integral calculus.
- Identify basic laws of phenomena, processes and applications related to optics (e.g., periodic processes, geometric and wave optics, etc.).
- Interpret the basic principles of these phenomena, processes and engineering applications theoretically and with the help of simple/model experiments (thought or demonstration) - Syllabus
- Syllabus of lectures (after weeks or blocks):
- 1. Basic ideas about light. The evolution of views on the nature of light, the dual nature of light. Speed of light.
- 2. Basic laws of propagation of light.
- 3. Light as electromagnetic wave, its properties. Maxwell's equations in optics and resolution. Power transferred by electromagnetic wave, Poyntig's vector.Polarization of electromagnetic waves.
- 4. Photometry. Basic photometric terms of quantity and units.
- 5. Interaction of light and matter. Fresnel's formula for the case isotropic non-absorbing medium. Optical properties of metals.
- 6. Light propagation by anisotropic medium, birefringence, optical activity, polarization.
- 7. Interference of light, conditions for noticeable interference. Coherent light sources - lasers. Young's attempt, finges of the same inclination and the same thickness, thin-layer interference. Many beams interference. The use of interference.
- 8. Diffraction of light - the basic principles. Fraunhoffer difraction. Diffraction on slit and grating. Fresnel diffraction. Resolution limit of optical instruments.
- 9. Holography and its use.
- 10. Geometrical optics. Essential elements of imaging systems, the characteristics of image, magnification.
- 11. Thin and thick lens, rendering equation. Optical defects and their correction. Simple optical instruments (magnifying glass, telescope, microscope).

- Teaching methods
- lecture, numerical exercises and demonstration experiments; the lecture will take place in the form of a debate based on a previous independent study of the given topic with a subsequent summary (inverted class method, peer-instruction, ...)

- Exam (written, experimental and oral) with continuous evaluation within the semester: - active work at seminars (calculation of model tasks) interim answers and written tests (min. 50% success rate) - final written and oral exam, which may include a simple school experiment (implemented or commented).
