- Course objectives
- Expansion of vocabulary; Practicing common collocations and chunks; individual approaches to voabulary stratification
- Learning outcomes
- After successful completion, the student will be able to
- describe and practically apply paradigmatic (synonymy, opposition etc.) and syntagmatic (esp. collocations) relationships in vocabulary;
- explain these using examples in authentic texts;
- describe individual word formation elements and apply them creatively in a context;
- apply tools for practical lexical usge. - Syllabus
- A text and words in it – a primitive and scientific approach
- Why making distinction between "word" and "lexeme"
- Menus as a source of lexical material
- Guessing hobby: typical vocabulary (word fields and collocations)
- What can proper names tell us and how to to "translate" them
- Word formation: system and creativity
- Compound words: dominoes
- Derivatives: opposites, little things, big things, opposite sex/gender, etc.
- "Killing Abbreviations"
- Phrases and phrasemes: eternal problems
- Where to get mor information and “help yourself”
