Prerequisites
The course introduces students to the basics of scientific work and the use of basic, mainly qualitative, methods in (social) pedagogical research. The methodological knowledge and skills of students are further profiled in the follow-up master's study within the course Fundamentals of Quantitative and Qualitative Methods of Educational Research.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
The capacity limit for the course is 50 student(s).
Current registration and enrolment status: enrolled: 52/50, only registered: 0/50, only registered with preference (fields directly associated with the programme): 0/50
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
there are 7 fields of study the course is directly associated with, display
Course objectives
At the end of the course, the student will be able to: Interpret the basic terms; understand the basic differences between the quantity and quality oriented researches; design the basic research plans (for the final wok and small research probes); use the basic methods of research and interpret the data collected. The subject introduces the students to basic of scientific work and possible use of basic methodes of pedagogical research.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- describe the differences between lay and scientific knowledge of reality
- define the differences between qualitative and quantitative research strategies, based on knowledge of different theoretical backgrounds (philosophies), objectives, methods, data collection and analysis, production of diverse theories, etc.
- orientation in basic qualitative research strategies, defining the differences between different strategies (case study, ethnographic research, biographical research, etc.)
- demonstrate knowledge of basic data collection methods and the ability to analyse them (see seminar exercises)
- be familiar with the principles of scientific work (working with sources) and respect ethical principles when working with data, respondents and scientific sources
- to carry out a qualitative research design, to design a research-oriented bachelor's thesis - to be familiar with the basic characteristics of variables (qualitative and quantitative)
Key student outcomes in the seminar include:
- the ability to develop the concept of a research study, including critical reflection and respect for formalities
- analyze a transcript through a selected qualitative method
- design a complex qualitative research investigation
