Course objectives
The course priority is to get the student familiar with social and legal protection of children, introduce them into this discipline from the point of view of theory, practice and court decisions. The course is based on an interrelation of social work, social education, law and psychology. The course consists of basics of social and legal protection of children and is focused on competences and activity of governmental and non-governmental institutions. Apart from that, the course covers also casuistries and discussions.
Learning outcomes
The student will describe the rights and responsibilities between children and parents, describe the sociopathological manifestations of children's behaviour, explain their causes, ways of prevention and legal consequences. The student will characterize the function and variability of the family in the cultural and historical context, describe the transformation of the present family and its impact on the education of children. Knowledge of social and legal protection of children and its connection to other fields.

  • 1. Introduction and basic principles of social and legal protection of children. 2. Laws concerning social and legal protection of children and its application in practice. 3. Standards of social and legal protection of children. 4. A child at risk (evaluation of the situation of family and child, case conference, individual plan of the child protection). 5. Abused and neglected children. Facilities for children requiring immediate help. 6. Family law (divorces, adjusting the situations, collision guardian). 7. Substitute family care (adoption, foster care). 8. Social curator – curator for children and youth. 9. Criminal responsibility of children and youth (Juvenile court law). 10. Application to a court by Authority of social and legal protection of children. 11. Educational measures. 12. Institutional education and protective education. 13. Minor mothers (parental responsibility, legal capacity). 14. Domestic violence.

Teaching methods
Commentation, course also consists of casuistry and discussion.
Assessment methods
Students elaborate a paper of 3 pages and submit it via e-mail to the lecturer until the deadline presented in the course. The core of the paper will be a casuistry concerning the field of social and legal protection of children, for instance social pathology of children and youth, abused and neglected children, divorces, foster care, adoption etc. The paper will contain personal and family anamnesis, diagnostics, case description, prognosis. At the final colloquium the students apply their paper outcomes into the field of the social and legal protection of children, furthemore they have to prove their knowledge of the discipline.
