Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to a communicative appproach in the study of English syntax. Main topics: functions of language with regards to their role in the act of communication, speech act theory, communicative sentence types, sentence patterns in communication, grammatical cohesion, register variation, functional sentence perspective.
Syllabus
  • 1. Normative syntax vs. Communicative syntax. The act of communication - general characteristics. 2. Variation in language according to the user and according to the use. 3. Language functions. Types of context. 4. Speech act theory. Conversational principles: co-operation and politeness. 5. Sentence, utterance and discourse. Types of sentences: one-element and two-element sentences, major and minor sentences. 6. Communicative sentence types. 7. The function of the Subject and the Predication in English. 8. Sentence patterns in communication - splitting, reduction and composition. 9. Emphatic sentence structures. Condensation and nominal tendencies in English. 10. Written vs, spoken language. 11. Formal vs. informal language. 12. Functional sentence perspective. 13. FSP and word order in English.
