  • BRITISH LITERATURE II: the 19th century Winter term 2004 Mgr. Lucie Podrouková Week One The outline of the course and the work required. Preromanticism: Robert Burns. Week Two Preromanticism continued: William Blake: nature and spirit. Week Three Romaticism proper: William Wordsworth, Week Four Romantic concept of poetry and the second generation: Percy Byshe Shelley: nature and history. Lord Byron, John Keats Week Five The Rise of the novel: Jane Austen: women in society. Week Six From Romanticism to Realism: Mary Shelley and Emily Brontë: Noble Savages, social outcasts. Week Seven Women and education: Charlotte Brontë and George Eliot. Week Eight Unforgettable characters and social criticism: Charles Dickens. Week Nine New Romanticism and dark hearts: Robert Louis Stevenson and Joseph Conrad. Naturalism and fate: Thomas Hardy Week Ten Art for arts sake or not quite: Oscar Wilde.
