Course objectives
The course 'Grammar A' is designed for the 1st year students as an introductory course summarising and developing the students' knowledge of the English grammar. It focuses on the practice of various grammatical issues at advanced level. Its inseparable part is also theoretical background students should become familiar with, i.e. essential linguistic terminology connected with learning as well as teaching the language. The course is based on 'A Student's Grammar of the English Language' by Sidney Greenbaum and Randolph Quirk. This term the following chapters will be discussed: A general framework, Verbs and auxiliaries and The Semantics of the verb phrase. (Other word classes will be dealt with in Grammar B course in spring.)

  • A general framework (terminology); Verbs and auxiliaries (full verbs, primary verbs and auxiliaries, the subjunctive mood); The semantics of the verb phrase (time, tense, aspect). Materials used: A Student's English Grammar Workbook by Sylvia Chalker, Grammar I by Renata Povolna, handouts and additional worksheets. Assessment methods (in Czech)
Requirements: attendance (at least 80%), active participation, all required homework, 3 achievement tests during the term (pass mark 70%), credit test - it will consist of theoretical and practical part (pass mark 70%).
