- Course objectives
- This course provides an introduction to the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere. By the end of the course, students should have an understanding of the physics governing radiative transfer in the earth’s atmosphere; you should know the methods of solving the radiative transfer equation. They should be familiar with the scientific and popular literature associated with radiation in the earth’s atmosphere.
- Syllabus
- Radiation and the atmosphere
- Temperature structure of the atmosphere/earth Climate record of the earth
- Surface energy balance of the earth over time Global energy balance in the sun-earth system.
- Earth radiative equilibrium temperature Greenhouse/gray atmosphere
- Ideal gas law Hydrostatic balance Geometry of accounting for radiation. Angles and solid angle.
- Radiance, irradiance and power. Absorption, reflection, emission, transmission Absorption and optical depth. Ozone Layer.
- Themal radiation/blackbody Earth’s orbit, long-term cycles. Seasonality of radiation. Ice ages and earth’s orbit, Milankovich cycles Latitudinal energy distribution and redistribution Scattering of radiation. Influence of clouds and aerosols on climate Atmospheric physicists attempt to model Earth's atmosphere using various models.
