Course objectives
The aim of the course is to lay the foundations of rhetoric. We focus on two meanings of rhetoric: 1) rhetoric as a scientific discipline, a science on refined public speech acts rhetoric, 2) rhetoric as oratory oratory, skills of oratory. The content of the course is to learn about the foundations of rhetoric in practice, to get to know specified oratorical devices and to make a refined speech act with a perfect expressive presentation.
Syllabus
  • 1 Rhetoric as a science of oratory / art of public speaking. 2 Rhetoric as an art of speaking, speaking skills. 3 Speech and its pervasive function, respect for language norms, esp. with the emphasis on the literary level of the Czech language and the sound aspect of the speech, pronunciation, and expressive presentation. 4 Respect for language norms considering the theory of oratorical style. 5 Specific rhetoric devices rhetorical figures, peculiarities of the text, esp. poetical expressions of the text, intensification of the speech and the like. 6 Practical exercises in rhetoric.
