Course objectives
Topics from the Czech literature are designed as selected insights into the problematic nature of the national literature in the period of the Enlightment and National Revival. Within the discipline the most significant personalities of the literature in the Czech lands will be presented and students will learn about the main works of individual writers in a broader context of the studied period. Students will get an insight into basic trends and movements of literature of the period in question, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for that particular period.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to Czech literature of the National Revival. 2. Basic problems of the development of literature in the period of the National Revival, outline of the main stages of the development. 3. Basic facts from the literature of the National Revival. 4. Initiation of the National Revival in Czech literature. 5. Understanding of literature of the National Revival within the society (1830 – 1848). 6. Literature in the time of the revolution of 1848.

Teaching methods
Students will get an insight into basic trends and movements of literature of the period in question, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for that particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Students will present the results of their work in both written (assignment) and oral form (mini-lecture), thus enhancing their individual style and the ability of critical thinking. The emphasis is put on student´s ability to evaluate a literary work, to compare it in the context of the current Czech and world literary production and to defend their views using precise terminology. The course is completed with a colloquium/credit.
