- Course objectives
- A detailed look at the beginnings and influences of French national literature: The main genres of medieval epic literature: chansons de geste, their origins, development, and their influence on both French and other countries' literature. The theories on the origins of chansons de geste. Other epic styles of the Middle Ages – versified chronicles and legends. The typical themes of these works – searching for new countries, searching for Paradise, discoveries, and the lives of the saints. The influence in other works of both French and European literature. The Medieval understanding of the world. The influence of medieval literature on books for children and young people from the Medieval period through to today. The introduction of selected texts, their importance and influence. Medieval man as both spectator and listener. Both the lecture and seminar include visual presentations. At the end of this course, students will acquire a knowledge of the most popular French medieval epic structures, in particular chansons de geste, chantefable and their parodies. The students will be able to both understand the meaning of these texts and gain a deep knowledge of the literature of the period. They will be able to employ this knowledge to locate and identify related adaptations of medieval literature in later developments of both the French and Czech languages. They will be able to pass on their knowledge to primary school pupils, and formulate reasoned arguments to illustrate the importance of learning the oldest works of French literature as well as those of other cultures.
