- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to acquaint students with basic literary theory and and teach them how to use its tools in reading and analysis. The starting point will be provided by activities related to the definition of literature and the process and practice of reading. At the end of the course students will be able to recognize major theoretical approaches of literary criticism and question, interpret, and evaluate complex literary texts. Also, students will gain reading and writing skills such as outlining, drafting, organizing and revising their own papers.

- 1. Paying Attention to Text (what is literature; close-reading technique, textual analysis)
- 2. Asking Questions (analyzing and interpreting texts; literary communication; argumentation; participation in a debate)
- 3. Critical Thinking (basic terms of literary theory, major trends in anglophone literary criticism)
- 4. Writing About Literature (how to write research papers, issues of citation and plagiarism, major skills in the writing process such as developing ideas, outlining, drafting, organizing, arguing, comparing, contrasting)

- Teaching methods
- Class discussions on assigned readings, individual and group presentations, homework that entails reading and writing response papers.
- Assessment methods
- -attendance is not mandatory but strongly recommended
-active participation in class discussion on readings
response papers (students must submit a paper for each class)
group or individual oral presentation
-written exam will include 10 questions and will only test the materials covered in class(some of them multiple choice, some of them requiring a longer response) for 10 percent each. The passmark is 70 percent. - Language of instruction
