Course objectives
The aim of this course is acquire basic skills about using statistical data – gaining, processing and presentation. Students will also be taught how to work with verified sources for gaining statistical data – statistical year books of Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia), Czech Statistical Office web sites, how to calculate characteristics of mean value and variability, apply suitable testing methods, elaborate maps, calculate basic and chain index, running average etc. It is also required at the end of the term to be able to calculate normal or binomial distribution with a support of MS Excel.
Syllabus
  • 1. Academic text make-up principles, geographical methods and its use.
  • 2. Basic sources of statistical data and information, The Czech Statistical Office, The Statistical Year Book of Czech Republic and internet sources.
  • 3. Statistical data processing (tables, diagrams, statistical maps and its basic components, arrangement and demonstration principles geographical features) manually and in computer environment.
  • 4. Calculations of mean values and characteristics of variability of one-dimensional statistical set manually and with a support of MS Excel.
  • 5. Normal distribution, Poissian distribution, binomial distribution, constructions, calculations.
  • 6. Calculation of correlation coefficient, construction of regression line.
  • 7. Methods of timelines elaboration on computer.

Teaching methods
Practice using the PC and the Internet.
Assessment methods
Practice, attendance required, completion of this course – credit. Students will elaborate their protocols not only during this course but also at home. To complete this course successfully, it is necessary to submit all the protocols in time, practical test, basic test of geography ( g. curriculum on level of primary and high school).
