Course objectives
Students will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies. Students will gain literary theoretical terminology and be able to apply these terminology to interpretation of literary texts. The course objective is to master the essentials of literary studies and to introduce the terminology and methodology of literary science.
Syllabus
  • 1. The basic concepts and bibliography concerning the subject. 2. Quotations, publication ethics, bibliographic data. 3. Prosodic systems in czech literature. 4. Introduction to the theory of verse. 5. Analyses of poetic texts. 6. Free verse: analyses. 7. Verse, strophic figure. 8. Literary work as a sign. 9. Language means of the literary text. 10. Thematic analyses. The structure of the literary work. 11. The main problems of genology: literary genres and movements. 12. Final test.

Teaching methods
Form of course: seminar. Methods: class and group discussions, pair work, homework.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: students hand in a written assignment and pass the final test which contains questions related to the topics listed in the syllabus. The test is scored. Students must obtain at least 70 % right answers.
