Course objectives
The aim of the course is to understand the problems of geography of services (mainly trade), transport and tourism. Student will be able at the end of the course to explain the importance of location factors for the location of these activities, search or obtain data on trade, transport and tourism, and interpret them in relation to landscape and other socio-economic factors.

  • 1. Geography of non-production sector and its position in system of geographical sciences.
  • 2. Geography of services – trade (with a focus on trends in retail).
  • 3. Geography of services – recent trends in retail.
  • 4. Geography of services – public and commercial services.
  • 5. Geography of transport – introduction, development, basic concepts.
  • 6. Geography of transport – the concept of transport costs.
  • 7. Geography of transport – types of transport.
  • 8. Geography of tourism – introduction, development of tourism geography. Classification of tourism.
  • 9. Geography of tourism – factors and assumptions for tourism development.
  • 10. Geography of tourism – approaches and methods of tourism analysis.
  • 11. Geography of tourism – international tourism.

Theoretical preparation - lectures. Discussion.
Assessment methods
Final written exam usually consists of 12 open-ended questions rated with 12 points. It is necessary to gain at least 7 points for successful completion of an exam. Written test may be replaced by an oral examination.
