- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce the world literature for children and young adults in partial probes of its development, paying particular attention to the authors and texts inserted into present readers. Lectures combine literary-historical as well as thematological point of view, and note current events in the world literature for young adults. Students will get an insight into the literary genres and movements of literature for children of the period in question. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities of the literary process in that particular period. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies.
- Learning outcomes
- After successfully completing his/her studies the student is able to: prove active deep professional knowledge of the branch discipline; actively use theoretical knowledge of literary theory, history and literary criticism, develop readership, motivate them to read valuable literature, and thereby strengthen shared ethical values and cultural mutuality.
- Syllabus
- 1. The concept of world literature for youth, possibilities of study. International institutions and organizations dealing with literature for children and youth. 2. The contribution of the English and French Enlightenment to literature for youth. 3. Folk fairy tale in various national literatures, the development of artificial fairy tale in the 19th century. 4. The development streams in the literature for youth in the 20th century. Selected representatives of the world literature for youth in the 20th century (J. M. Barrie, A. A. Milne, A. de Saint-Exupéry, A. Lindgren, T. Jansson, J. Gaarder. D. Almond). 5. Writers who were awarded international prizes: Hans Christian Andersen Prize, Astrid Lindgren Prize.

- Teaching methods
- Students will get an insight into the literary trends and movements within the world literature for young adults. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities of the period in question. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in the contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.

- Type of course: lecture. Credit requirements: written assignment dealing with a chosen topic covered in the lectures.
