The basic study material is New English File Upper Intermediate. The students are expected to be acquainted with the first four files.

Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to develop speaking, reading, writing and listening skills at upper-intermediate level. The basic study material is coursebook New English File Upper-Intermediate supplemented by various additional materials. Throughout the semester students are encouraged to link theory in the classroom to practice at schools via practical tasks.
At the end of the course students should be able to: discuss everyday topics, communicate in everyday situations, read and listen to authentic texts at upper-intermediate level and communicate in the language fluently.
Learning outcomes
Student will:
- understand the main ideas of spoken and written interaction containing also unknown experssions; the topics may be abstract
- be able to react spontaneously while interacting with a native speaker
- express themselves more or less fluently in oral production
- be able to fluently express their ideas in written production, explain their opinion on current issues
- be able to distinguish between formal and informal language
- use idiomatic expressions

  • The basic study material is the coursebook New English File UPPER- INTERMEDIATE (Student's book and Workbook), see Literature below. The syllabus includes Units 5 - 6, the focus is on speaking and listening activities and development of students' vocabulary.

Assessment methods
Regular attendance (in case of illness - a sick note in IS necessary) Regular contributions to the forums. Maximum points for the semester : 200 points/ pass mark 140 points (to pass the tests students must reach minimum 70 %) Components of the assessment: written end-of-semester test based on the files covered in the seminars: pass mark 70%: 80 p (two resits) oral interviews: 60 p (no resits for this part, students get points for the overall assessment) Placement test : 10 points (beginning of the semester) progress test: (mid semester, no resits, see FURTHER INFO ON POINTS BELOW) continuous assessment based on active participation in the seminars: 30 points FURTHER INFORMATION ON POINTS: PROGRESS TEST: 100-95% 10 POINTS 94-85% 9 POINTS 84-75% 8 POINTS 74-70% 7 POINTS LESS THAN 70% 1 POINT FURTHER INFORMATION ON POINTS: FINAL TEST: 93 –100%: 80p; 88 – 92%: 70p; C 82 – 87%: 60p; 76 – 81%: 50p; 70 – 75%: 40p; 0 – 69%: 0p Other types of continuous assessment: 40 points - A book in English and TP task - 10 POINTS Moodlinka and class work - 30 POINTS Active participation means coming prepared to the seminars, working in moodlinka, contributing to the forums (each post at least 50 words) and speaking English (not Czech.) Most of the work is based on students' self-study. Oral interview: based on what will be done in seminars (questions based on topics in the textbooks, explanation of the words and phrases from covered units.)
