Course objectives
After absolving the course, students
- should have a systematic overview over contemporary valency theory,
- should be able to identify problems arising while working within this theoretical framework,
- should understand descriptions of valency frames as they are given in dictionaries and reference grammars of German,
- should be able to applicate the framework in describing authentic language material,
- should be able to decide on appropriate methods and materials (making use of valenvy descriptions) while planning their future teaching.

Syllabus
  • 1. Foundations of Valency Theory: valency carrier, valency potential, realization of valency, actants and circumstants (arguments and adjuncts). (week 1 and 2)
  • 2. Identification of actants: obligatory and facultative constituents, formally governed and formally ungoverned constituents. (week 3)
  • 3. The sematic structure of valency carriers and thematic roles. (week 4 and 5)
  • 4. Semantic actants and their realizations by means of moprphosyntactic features. (week 6)
  • 5. The six layers of valency description according to Helbig (1992). (week 7)
  • 6. Multidimensional models following Jacobs (1994) critics. (week 8)
  • 7. Subcategorization features to restrict the filling of valency slots. (week 9)
  • 8. Sentence structures according to Engel (1988). (week 10)
  • 9. Reading valency entries in Helbig/Schenkel and VALBU. (week 11 and 12)

Assessment methods
When students choose to finish the course with a colloquium (“k”), they are required to hand in a short paper containing an analysis of the valency frames of certain selected verbs. In addition (as every participant of the course), they have to pass a written test verifying the understanding of the concepts discussed during the semester. A minimum of 60 percent of the overall points is required.
