Course objectives
The aim of the course is to establish basics in Phonetics and Phonology with strong focus on practice.
Learning outcomes
The student • understands fundamental linguistic terms in the field of phonetics and phonology and is able to explain these using particular examples; • knows the differences between Czech and English phonemes; • is able to pronounce all English phonemes correctly, is able to explain how they are produced and estimate their typical occurrence in words on the grounds of their spelling; • knows phonemic transcription, is able to use it correctly when transcribing simple English sentences (i.e., transcription from a written text as well as dictation) and is also able to read (pronounce) the transcribed words/sentences correctly; • is able to put theoretical knowledge into practice.

Assessment methods
Requirements: Oral and written credit. Homework throughout the semester. Active participation in the lessons. Written test, pass mark 70%. Oral examination, pass mark 70%.
