Course objectives
The aim of the course is to investigate various possibilites of using popular songs in a secondary school classroom. At the end of this course, students should be able to exploit the song material and design activities and lesson plans based on songs.
Learning outcomes
In the end of the course students will be able - to choose the right song for the age and level of their (future) learners - to design appropriate activities for different purposes: practicing vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, language skills - to use songs as a rich source for teaching culture, discussing about values and moral issues.
Syllabus
  • - Song as teaching material - Choosing the right song (respecting learners' level, age and interests). - Designing activities going with the song material (pre-, while-listening, follow up activities) - Songs for different purposes: teaching and practicing grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, language skills - Songs for teaching culture - Song as a basis for class discussion.

Teaching methods
The course is practice based. Students will be presented various examples of songs and song-based activities, analyze them, discuss and finally design their own song-based activities. Online studying, online discussions, online presentations.
Assessment methods
A seminar paper (a design of a music-based activity - lesson plan) is required by the end of the semester, followed by feedback. The paper is to be uploaded into the mood-link-a, commented on by all course participants and discussed with the teacher(s).
