Course objectives
Students will get acquainted with specific textbooks and will try to apply the principles of modifying teaching materials for the needs of pupils with a different mother tongue, taking into account the personality and possibilities of the pupil. They can combine and use lessons from developmental psychology, didactics of Czech language and psycholinguistics. Will understand the problematics of evaluating and testing individuals with a different mother tongue. They will be able to explain the current concept of CEFR and a language exam as part of application for Czech citizenship.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, the students will be able to analyze appropriate teaching tools; use gained knowledge, skills and optimal methodological approaches to develop key competences of students with a different mother tongue; to design own teaching materials and critically evaluate textbooks, other teaching materials and authentic texts. Provide an overview of the essential methods and systems of testing Czech as a foreign language; Provide an overview of components of typical Czech language testing (listening, speaking, grammar, writing, or other areas tested); Develop a standardized formulations of questions and tasks.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction of textbooks and other teaching materials of Czech as a foreign/second language; 2. Use of terminology, presentation of individual activities; 3. Introduction of other relevant (mainly internet) sources for teaching Czech as a foreign/second language; 4. Authentic texts in teaching Czech as foreign/second language; 5. Practical use of didactic tools in teaching; 6. Concept of evaluating and testing of knowledge of a foreign language. 7. Means of testing of knowledge of a foreign language – typical elements of testing (listening, speaking, grammar, writing). 8. Categorization of levels of knowledge of a foreign language – required knowledge and competences. 9. Evaluation of language skills in Czech language of non-native speakers. 10. Specifics of testing and evaluating of Czech language in connection with its stratification. 11. Czech language exam as part of application for Czech citizenship.

To successfully complete the course the students need to: 1. read the recommended literature; 2. do a written assignment – own design of a teaching material or a critical evaluation of a textbook or different teaching material and authentic text.
