Course objectives
Students are able to evaluate the current concept of linguistic correctness. They are able to comprehensively explain the concepts of standard and non-standard (colloquial) Czech. They are able to distinguish problematic spelling and grammar phenomena and to suggest the best solution within a particular text. Students understand the difference between the language standard and codification. They are able to use codification handbooks effectively and perform proofreading text.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to: - define the cultivated form of the national language in both spoken and written form. - explain the positions of specific language phenomena in the language system. - discover deficiencies in the spelling and grammar of texts. - explain the concept of linguistic correctness in spelling, morphology and in other linguistic levels, and to evaluate some of the often-discussed phenomena as linguistically correct or incorrect. - perform proofreading.

  • 1. Language, the language system. 2. Language levels, linguistic disciplines. 3. The problem of standard and non-standard (colloquial) Czech (formality and informality). Linguistic correctness. 4. Language standard, codification. Codification handbooks and work with them. Changes in the codification of the past and today. 5.-6. The graphic aspects of language. Czech spelling. Spelling and linguistic correctness. 7.-8. Morphological aspects of texts. Linguistic correctness in morphology. 9. Most common deviations from the language correctness in contemporary written texts. The most common mistakes in public written texts. Possible causes of language variations. 10. Most frequent deviations from the language correctness in pupil and student work, their causes. Options to eliminate them. 11.-12. Lexical spelling and proofreading.

Teaching methods
The type of tuition: seminar. A seminar, active analytical students work in the analysis of texts, active synthetic students work in the interpretation of linguistic phenomena, discussion about the professional course issues. The tuition will have a form of language and orthographical excercises - spoken and written.
Assessment methods
Presentations at the workshop to the selected sub-theme related to the issue of linguistic correctness. The knowledge of discussed matter will be verified by written tests in each semminar session. The final test includes approximately20 questions focused to elementary language phenomena. To be successfull student has to answer 80 % of them. Testing knowledge of spelling and grammar knowledge.
