- Course objectives
- Upon completion of this course the student will be able to define specifics of care for people with hearing impairment from birth to end of life. He / she will be able to orientate in the possibilities of diagnosing auditory defects; will be able to enumerate typical variations in speech development in children with hearing impairment; he will be orientated in the possibilities of compensation of auditory defects and will enumerate compensatory aids used by people with hearing impairment. Students will be introduced to visual-motor communication devices and will be able to describe the importance of their use in practice. Student will be able to characterize possibilities and course of early intervention of hearing impaired; will be able to describe the structure of complex care; the education system; career opportunities. The student will be oriented in the offer of social services for people with hearing impairment, including interpreting services. The student will be briefly acquainted with the issue of persons with sensory impairment.
- Learning outcomes
- • orientation in classification and etiology of hearing impairment;
• orientation in the possibilities of comprehensive care for people with hearing impairment and education system;
• ability to describe communication systems used by people with hearing impairment;
• orientation in the possibilities of auditory prosthetics and in the procedures for the rehabilitation of hearing impaired individuals. - Syllabus
- • Terminological starting points of the field of surdopedy - definition of basic terms - field, aim, methods, interdisciplinary relations, object of interest in the field of surdopedy.
- • Historical development of care for people with hearing impairment - pioneers of deaf education (16th - 17th centuries), development of institutions, institutes and schools for the hearing impaired, development of teaching concepts, Milan congress, care of a person with hearing impairment in 20th century in the Czech lands, personalities in the world of people with hearing impairment
- • Hearing - anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, the importance of hearing, the consequences of hearing impairment. Classification and etiology of hearing impairment - factors affecting the development of the auditory system, hearing impairment diagnostics - hearing impairment diagnostics, objective and subjective auditory tests, screening hearing assessment, screening, preventive examinations.
- • Speech of hearing impaired individuals - ontogenesis of speech, stage of speech development in hearing impaired individuals, preparatory period and own speech development in children with hearing impairment in the hearing and deaf families, linguistic levels. Logopedic care in hearing-impaired individuals, early hearing-speech education.
- • Communication - characteristics and importance of interpersonal communication, communication systems of hearing impaired persons - overview and description, legislative measures.
- • Hearing prostheses - individual hearing protectors, instruments and aids for individual speech therapy and hearing education, compensation aids and their importance, use in education, legislation.
- • Early intervention of hearing impaired persons - early care, special pedagogical centers, forms of cooperation with the family, situation of parents with hearing impairment, health care, screening, screening, special pedagogical diagnostics, choice of school facilities.
- • The education system for people with hearing impairment - pre-school facilities, elementary schools for the hearing impaired, OU, SOU, SOŠ, secondary school for the hearing impaired, the possibility of studying students with hearing impairment at university. Communication approaches used in education of children and pupils with hearing impairment. Professional orientation and professional use of individuals with hearing impairment.
- • Inclusive education of children, pupils and students with hearing impairment - conditions, cooperation with the SPC, SPC services for hearing impaired pupils, regular school teachers and parents, support measures, legislation. Support measures for pupils with the need for support due to hearing impairment or impairment of auditory perception.
- • Legislative measures - legislative measures relating to the education of children, pupils and students with hearing impairment, the law on communication systems for deaf and deafblind people, the use of interpreting from / to sign language, contributions to compensatory aids, health care.
- • Deaf community - deaf culture, organization of hearing impaired people, deaf clubs, leisure activities, hearing aids journals. Interpreting services for hearing impaired people - interpreting from / to sign language, interpreting conditions, code of sign language interpreters, legislative measures.
