Course objectives
Having passed the course, students have insight into the world literature for youth, through partial studies of its development and in given sets of topics. Students will be able to explain the development of literary trends and movements in the particular period of Czech literature. They will be able to identify and analyse the style of outstanding literary personalities of the period. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies.
Syllabus
  • 1. The concept of world literature for youth, possibilities of further studies. International institutions and organizations engaging in children´s literature and books. 2. The beginnings of youth literature, contributions of English and French enlightment literature for children and youth. 3. The folk tale in various national literatures, the development of the artificial tale in the 19th and 20th centuries. 4. Streams of development and selected writers in literature for youth in the 20th century. 5. Topical issues in world literature for youth from the 1990s onwards.

Teaching methods
Type of course: consultations. Teacher´s lecture covers significant tendencies of the development; independent work with texts enhances students´ interpretational skills.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: written assignment – a seminar paper of 3-5 pages (topics will be assigned during the first tutorial).
