- Course objectives
- In this seminar, students are introduced to the essentials of literary criticism. They study pieces of literature from the period of the Enlightenment and National Revival. Students will get a broader knowledge of literary trends and movements in the given period, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities of the literary process of the period in question.

- 1. Introduction to the study of Czech literature of the first half of the 19th century. 2. Linguistic defence and its role at the beginning of Czech National Revival. 3. Literature of the Revival and its inspiration by world literature. 4. Classicism in literature. 5. Jan Kollár. 6. Old-Czech literary forgeries and their role in cultural happenings. 7. Václav Kliment Klicpera and the Czech theatre. 8. Karel Hynek Mácha and romantism in Czech literature. 9. Karel Sabina. 10. Božena Němcová. 11. Karel Havlíček Borovský. 12. Josef Jaroslav Langer.

- Teaching methods
- In the form of a seminar, students will get a broader knowledge of literary trends and movements of Czech literature in the given period, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities of the literary process of the 19th century. They will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more effectively. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
- Assessment methods
- The course is completed with a credit test in literature of the first half of 19th century and literature of the Enlightenment. The test contains 10 open questions. Students also have to hand in a seminar paper.
